Holistic Health and COVID-19

Image
“Health is not valued till the sickness comes” We, globally, can relate to this quote by Thomas Fuller on the face of the pandemic, today’s world is battling against. This pandemic is not only affecting us physically but also socially, emotionally, mentally and spiritually; all the five aspects of Holistic Health. Holistic Health may be an ancient concept but it demands a great deal of attention considering what the humans are facing today. Quoting William Osler, “The good physician treats the disease; the great physician treats the patient who has the disease”, also emphasizes the importance of treating the patient as a whole. When we fall sick, what heals us is not only the medical care but also the emotional support of our loved ones which gives us the willpower to keep fighting against the disease. But when somebody gets affected by COVID-19, they are isolated from their families which takes a toll on them on another level, simultaneously affecting their families’ emotional ...

The ill-informed

Image
THE ILL-INFORMED He switched off the TV after hours of solemn news, completely unprovoked What a spineless population ever so easily coaxed In March, he reassured colleagues the virus wouldn’t reach Pakistan anytime soon As it only attacks the enemies of China, therefore our nation stands immune He promenaded the streets in April, his face covered with a smirk Because a mask is unavailing, according to his social media network And when Eid came in May, he paid a visit to all his town folks To expose them all to his notions, that the pandemic is a hoax June commenced with the ambulance carrying his neighbor with cumbersome breath While he aggressively bellowed warnings that doctors would inject him with death It wasn’t until in the scorching heat of July, he began to shiver in his quilt His aching body wrapped in thick blankets, his ashamed mind wrapped up in guilt And as his fatigued eyes glanced out his bedroom window to observe rainclouds covering the sun He for...

Corona Chronicles

Image
Entering into the Corona Isolation Ward with my colleague doctor, wearing personal protective equipment, the ward was sweltering and we had to wear the PPE for straight eight hours without any break. I immediately started sweating but had to endure it. It was a more than 20-bedded male ward and us two doctors had to manage all these patients. Of course we were the hope of life for these patients, who were wearing oxygen masks, trying to contain oxygen in their blood, taking each breath with great effort. I thought I may show this all to the outer world that still thinks this pandemic is not a reality but a ploy. The face shield and visor was blurring my view but I started my duty by monitoring vitals, checking saturation, revising treatment tickets and addressing patients' active complaints etc. A day back, I glanced at the duty roster sent by the administration of the hospital that stated that I had been called for Covid ward duty for a week. As a doctor we have to give our ...

An Insight into the Corona Situation

Image
To the ones who say corona is a drama and they are blaming the doctors, I am writing from the isolation room in Sheikh Zayed Hospital. You'll believe when you'll see your really close relatives, either your parents, grandparents or siblings suffer from it, as they gasp for air; when your heart will drop with the drop of oxygen saturation of your loved ones, and then you will be praying. Then you'll feel like someone has put life in you again when the saturation rises. Nothing is more painful than seeing your loved ones on oxygen supply or worst, on a ventilator. Or when you yourself are tested positive and after every hour you see coffins passing by you, of someone you don't know. The purpose of saying this is that I didn't allow my mother to go outside for two whole months but she somehow got infected. She is hypertensive and diabetic so you can imagine how Covid-19 took a toll on her health; nausea, diarrhoea, fever, light cough and then tachypnoea. Only Allah and...

A Verse, A Story

Image
It was the sacred month of Ramadan and like everybody I was trying to gather it's blessing as much as I could.I was not a very religious person but I pray five times a day aside Ramadan too.So in Ramadan routine there was addition of Reading of Quran too.I had just finished praying the salah and when I lift my hands for dua, all the complains I had in my heart come at the edge of my tongue. Not making it to my favorite institute, having lost my father at my teens, can't have enough money to buy the dresses I liked , Comparing myself with my friends and cousins and always finding myself inferior besides I pray all the salahs, and the most recent that I was trying to get appointed as a teacher at some institute but couldn't make it besides trying for a long time, and frustrating over all this kind of stuff was the part of my dua at the end of Salahs. After I was done with my complains with Allah Mian.I got up and opened Quran. While I was doing the recitation I came across ...

Al-Baqqarah, Verse 222

Image
I am cold and passive. Like a stagnant blue lake sleeping in the arms of green mountains.  And you burn in an awfully beautiful fire. Like those mad sea waves dance to grapple moonlight.  Every morning, I see you touch your T-shirts and caress your red-dyed hair, with an endless emptiness in your eyes; in front of the mirror.  Whenever any song of yours goes popular, you don't sleep for many nights.  I remember when you removed away that purple piece of cloth from your head, you burnt in fever for several days.  Whenever you stay up partying and return late, I know that you check into my room and stand here for minutes.  Whenever you test your sound system before performing, you always reckon the times when we used to go with Mom. When your innocent beautiful recitation of the Quranic verses used to numb people. Then Mom left us. Things changed.  I chose to rush to Him. And hid under His haven.  And you, you chose a...

False Reliance

Surah Taghabun :16 The sun rises everyday like a lantern in the huge blue sky, lighting up everything and warming every corner of the earth without discrimination. The moon, the stars and everything in the sky lights up Allah's creation without holding back anything. It's their job and they perform it without restraining anyone's right. However man doesn't act the same way. Greed is what beholds the mindset of a human being. It isn't in his nature. His nature is as pure as that of the sun and the moon. It's the first breech in its pure nature which evokes him to do further crimes. Greed is just a rough translation of the word used in this ayah شح نفس . Let's dig deeper into it. Imagine a caravan of people traveling in the middle of a desert in harsh summer. The temperatur...

They Say A Sinner's Tears...

Image
They say a sinner's tears Eradicate his sins and fears But what about a sinner like me? One who repents and repeats The one who can no longer cry Whose tear ducts are forever dry Whose heart is now merely a lump of coal Whose soul is the blackest of all souls Who does not qualify to enter paradise Around whom only hellfire can rise He says, Who can forgive sins except Him But what do I do when my hope grows dim Maheen Mansoor, 3rd Year Fatima Jinnah Medical University

The Sinner's Tears

Image
"Sinner" is my name. I wish for success, money, and fame. I know the hard truth that life is a game. If I win, I get Jannah. If I lose, I get the blame. I saw myself in the mirror. I said to the mirror, "ABDULLAH is my name." The mirror replied, "No! 'Sinner' is your name." "Sinner" is my name. I wish for success, money & fame. Allah told me, "Obey me, I will give you all that you Name." Prophet (PBUH) told me "this life is a journey, and Jannah is the final aim." Shaitan told me "he is my friend, he will help me win this game." I saw myself in the mirror. I said to the mirror, "ABDULLAH is my name." The mirror replied, "No! 'Sinner' is your name." "Sinner" is my name. I wish for success, money and fame. Now, I only did what my friend told me and I got all the success, money and fame. I thought I'd won the game, but it was a fake trophy with a ...

Surah Al-Anfal [8:62]

Image
Verse number 62 from the Surah Al-Anfal. Surah number 8 written in the 10th part of the Holy Quran. Surah Al-Anfal is a Madni, pairing with the very next Surah to it Surah -Al Tawbaa, completed after the battle of Badr (The first battle of Muslims against disbelievers). This Ayat brings peace and gladdening the deeply grimed and grayed walls of my heart. According to this, in its first part, it was told that, "And if they intend to deceive you, Then verily, Allah is All-Sufficient for you" In it, actually, Almighty Allah mentioned His favor on the Prophet, in that He aided him with believers, the Muhajirin and the Ansar. When combined to previous Ayat 61 which says, "And if they incline to peace, then incline to it [also] and rely upon Allah. Indeed, it is He who is the Hearing, the Knowing." If we practically apply it to our lives, it ...
