Movie Review: Birds of Prey
Title: Birds of prey (and the fantabulous emancipation of one Harley Quinn)
Genre: Superhero film
Director: Cathy Yan
Writer: Christina Hodson
Based on: Birds of Prey by Jordan B. Gorfinkell and Chuck Dixon
Cast: Margot Robbie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Ewan McGregor and others.
Synopsis: After breaking up with Joker, Harley Quinn joins Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya to save a young girl from Gotham's evil crime lord also known as Black Mask.
Review: More than three years after the the unfortunate "Suicide Squad", we finally have a Harley Quinn movie. Here I am going to explore all those points which make this movie worth your time and money and after that I am going to talk about all those places where the movie falters. Now here's the thing, in case you are wondering whether you should watch Suicide Squad before watching this movie, you don't need to stress yourself because Birds of Prey stands on its own just fine.
First thing's first, Margot Robbie proves herself as the perfect Harley Quinn. You can actually feel her enjoying the role and her excitement is literally contagious. She depicts the colourful and unhinged personality of Harley Quinn in all the right ways. Talking about the performance of the protagonist, how can we forget our villain. Ewan McGregor's portrayal of Black Mask is flawless. Despite the fact that we have seen some of the most criticality acclaimed villain performances in last few years, McGregor's performance still managed to standout. We must not forget Chris Messina's convincing portrayal of a deranged serial killer.
One of the highlights of the movie are its action sequences. The stunts are done in the most amazing way possible and the scenes are so neatly done that you can both focus on the actual fight and see everything happening around in the scene.
Cinematography is unparalleled. The way this movie has used the colour pallet is remarkable and so are its songs.
Voice-overs by Harley Quinn also make it easy for a person to keep up with Harley's perception of the events and with the plot as well (you may disagree with me because some people find them irritating instead of convenient).
Now coming to the points where the movie disappointed us. If you are looking for a group super hero film then you are looking at the wrong place because despite its title and what was shown in the trailers, it is more of a Harley Quinn movie. Other characters are barely developed and we don't know anything about them. It even faltered at the characterization of the villain. The only thing we know about him is that he is a terrible person and the only thing making this character convincing is Ewan McGregor himself.
The second most important thing that doesn't work according to expectations is the plot. When a film is not character driven, its plot driven but here the plot was ordinary. Look I wasn't expecting a jaw dropping kind of plot from a super hero movie but it doesn't have to be so exceptionally ordinary.
Now let me tell you this, if you have a problem watching psychopaths as protagonists of a superhero movie then this film is not for you but if you don't mind "non-stereotype heroes" and can also withstand R-rated voilence then it is the perfect, crazy, chaotic experience you can have.
