4a.m. Thoughts ( BOTM)
“lo! In the creation of the heavens and the Earth and (in) the
difference of night and day are tokens (of His sovereignty) for men of
understanding. Such as remember Allah, standing, sitting and reclining and
consider the creation of the heavens and the Earth and say :”Our Lord! Thou
created not this in vain”(surah Al-I ’Imran :190-191)
Why were these the
verses Prophet (SAW) chose to recite upon waking up for tahajudd? Well, what
other time is better for reflecting upon the perfect balance of the world
around us. Back in that time it was even more peaceful. Man had only just begun
to fiddle with nature.
Man has been born with
a longing for peace, peace he thinks he gets by better organization, by
disciplining his surroundings according to his own principles. He is rigid in
attaining that balance. All machines perfectly explain what I mean. The Earths
and heavens, on the other hand, are run with a discipline that’s natural, that
suits not only human needs but of all the other creations. Nature is
disciplined but not rigidly. True the Sun always rises from the East but does
it always rise at exactly 4 30 am? The time for sun rise changes in a natural
way. Throughout the year, the length of days and nights changes, weather
changes, even the Sun slightly changes it’s direction. One might regard them as
“inconsistencies” but to a thoughtful mind it’s perfect. It is what is needed,
it is what should be.
Man made machines,
rules may seem more disciplined, resistant to changes and yet that discipline
doesn’t last for long; that discipline is exhausting. It may seem appealing but
it’s not perpetual.
The same way the peace
in human life and mind cannot be defined by a human itself, for me peace is not
rigid, monotonous routine and the idea of "always being the best version of
myself". My peace stems from the knowledge, the acceptance of the fact, that
whatever I am, wherever I am, I am His slave (whether I am my worst self or my
best self). As the Sun never forgets to rise and set, the day never forgets to
end, I too, am supposed to remember my total submission to my master. Some days
the Sun is behind the clouds; I am
emotionally weakened. The Sun remains on sky and I remain His slave. Nature
remains in it’s boundaries and I try to do so for I do like peace; peace of
mind, peace of heart and peace in entire world. If I have to choose between
freedom and peace, I would always choose peace.
