USMLE stands for United States Medical Licensing Examination. In order to practice in the U.S., all medical students whether IMGs (international medical graduates) or AMGs (American Medical Graduates) have to give this series of exams. Only then does an international medical graduate become ECFMG certified and legally allowed to practice in the United States. ( ECFMG stands for educational commission for foreign medical students. ECFMG acts as the registration and score-reporting agency for the USMLE for foreign medical students/graduates, or in short, it acts as the designated Dean's office for International Medical Graduates in contrast to the American Medical Graduates). She's an Amazonian!

In Greek Mythology the Amazons were a tribe of women warriors. The word is said to be derived from the Iranian word “hama*zam” meaning “All women”. The same happens to be true for Fatima Jinnah. We’re a tribe of warriors here, an isolated island where women are basically the ruling elite. One thing that has always been unique to this institution is the women empowerment you’ll see here. We’re allowed to be ourselves truly without misogynistic cultural barriers prevalent in our society. You’ll see future doctors walking down the department blocks spontaneously erupt into Bollywood numbers at the top of their not-so-melodious voices, dancing with abandon or simply laughing gaily. Like all Amazonian tribes we open our doors to the outside world once annually for our famed Spring festivities i.e. the numerous intercollegiate events. For many people their alma mater is like their home. The feeling of love and belonging they get from anything related remotely to their institution is unparalleled by any feeling they would have for even a much better institution (in the world’s eyes). For me it’s a bit different. KE will always be my home. I have memories associated with its tiny nooks and corners but FJ, an institution I was never an official part of, has my heart. FJ is like a grandma’s home for me. The place where you feel safer and happier than any other place in the world. Where you are pampered and cherished. The place which seems to you the most perfect place in the world. I have never been a student of FJ but some of my earliest memories are related to it which were superimposed by even happier memories later in my life. Last night, your faded memory came to me, As in the wilderness, spring comes quietly, As slowly in desert, moves the breeze, As to a sick man, without cause, comes peace! The Comprehensive USMLE Guide For Pakistani Medical Students (Part 4: Step 1 FAQs)

1. What is the Step 1 exam format? The Step 1 exam is a computer-based test taken in a single day over an eight hour period. It’s a multiple choice question test that includes seven 60 minute blocks the number of questions per block varies but the number never exceeds 40. That’s an average of one minute and 18 seconds per question. The total number of questions is 280. Test takers are allowed 45 total minutes during the test for personal breaks. If you finish any section before the allotted hour is up, you can add that time to your personal break total. Six breaks total are allowed. There is an optional 15 minute tutorial period at the beginning of the exam. If you choose to skip the tutorial you can add the 15 minutes to your total break time. During the test, you are only allowed to bring soft foam earplugs into the examination room. Nothing else is allowed – no bags, electronics, phones, or even jackets are allowed.
